OK. . . So Maybe Not Always Loud Music. . .
The search for loud music – that is what the site says. Yet my shows this year have all been acoustic. Oops. You just never know. The plan back in December was to move to a harder louder sound. I was around the holidays and into January lining things up for such shows. Sadly, I was putting my eggs into one basket, a basket that was known around Yonkers and Westchester, as the Haunt. Shit happens.
I was wondering why I was not getting calls back. In a nut shell they are or were struggling over what else-finances. How appropriate in these times. Ah money is, was and will be what makes the world go round. That is what they say in Cabaret and I tend to agree.
So then the question was what to do? I had no clue. I had done the acoustic shows last spring -every Sunday and then on weeknights too. they were not too bad, but never my goal. We had issues of draw, of finding acts, paying acts, and begging acts to come back. Alright. . . I exaggerate. Retention-who knew I would be pondering such issues in music promotion! Long and short, by October of last year I decided it was time for a break, and I walked away. Why not, this was truly a non profit-I was not being paid, the artists were not being paid, and neither artists or audience were in signing on. Well not as many as we would have liked at least. So it was time to move on. No doubt I often forget or simply neglect those things that did work and those who helped make it happen. Don’t we all.
All that said, I did surprisingly get a call this March from Mr D’s asking if I wanted to kick of the shows again. Hungry to do something, I said sure. Well, we did a few shows in April and early May with alright results. This time bands and artists got a few bucks-enough for a round at the bar maybe. We still need a few more folks in the audience, but the shows worked. And we are lining up gigs for June, July and August.
Not only does Acoustic Sundays continue but we have a special show happening. Friday June 12th, we have Queen V come in and shake the place up! Now Queen V is one of the loudest acts in NYC. For those wanting a sampling of that, do check out her monthly “Take Back New York” shows at Don Hills, Her and her band never disappoint at those shows. Not only do you get a dose of Queen V, kicking ass on stage doing her tunes which are in the classic rock vein, but then she comes back and does a jam session featuring various folks from the NY music scene and beyond-an all-star session basically. Now when she comes to Yonkers, we will not seeing her and the band. In Yonkers it is just her and her acoustic, and believe me that is just as tasty-just as good.
In short, Queen V’s acoustic set was what started me on this foray in acoustic music-Acoustic Sundays. It was with a Queen V show in minds that I scoured the county looking for a room that would be up for such a show. It took three years to finally line it up-find the venue, line up my schedule, her schedule, etc-but it looks like it is happening June 12th.
Now the nice thing is that as Acoustic Sundays now have some history. We can mix it up and not only have Queen V but some other folks we have gotten to know over the last year. Words On Parchment will be there. Drew Torres will be there. Both are now regulars on Mr D’s Stage. and lastly we will mix it up with a new comer that I came across-Jason Fresta.
So Loud or not it will be a good show, and really that is what is we are after.
