Michael Grant: A Video Montage. . .
I first caught LA Guns with Michael Grant in 2015. They were playing a festival over in NJ. They were playing the smaller stage wedged between I believe TT Quick, a local NJ act from the 80s, and Lita Ford. I remember they were late to the stage. I recall them saying they went to the wrong stage. I can imagine them expecting. . .wanting to play the larger main stage and then having to wander and find their way here. They deserved better.
I myself had neglected them for awhile and that was even with the release of their 2012 album, Hollywood Forever. I missed them when they hit the Bowery Electric in like 2013. The Liza Colby Sound warmed up for them I believe. It could have been a very cool show. I wonder. I love the Bowery Electric for its intimacy, but really that is not what Phil and the boys crave. The last time I did see them was at the Continental. the place that today is soon to close, if it has not already and now boasts the cheapest shots in the city. . . They played there in 2007, and yes it was another intimate occasion. That was when Stacey Blades was still in the band.
I digress.
Each time I have seen them they were impressive. I liked Stacey, thought he did a good job and was bummed that he moved on. So when I saw that they had a fresh face in Michael Grant, I was not sure. He looked like a kid. Truly a hired gun. I figured he would be a decent guitar player that would get them through their set. I was afraid little more. I had low expectations.
I was mistaken.
The four times I saw him in LA Guns were a pleasure. I knew it was a matter of time till he moved on. And no doubt it could have been handled differently.
I wish Michael and the band the best going forward.
